As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,
O Lord, to us {belongeth} confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.
My confusion {is} continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,
We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.
Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God {is} righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice.
And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the LORD shall lead you.
What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things {is} death.

Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done {this} evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, {and} be clear when thou judgest.
They shall be ashamed, and also confounded, all of them: they shall go to confusion together {that are} makers of idols.
Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that {were} not good, and shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations.
That thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and never open thy mouth any more because of thy shame, when I am pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord GOD.
But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over {our} head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens. {trespass: or, guiltiness}
And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
{He is} the Rock, his work {is} perfect: for all his ways {are} judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right {is} he.
And it shall come to pass in that day, {that} the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
TZADDI. Righteous {art} thou, O LORD, and upright {are} thy judgments.
And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste.
And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities {deserve}, and hast given us {such} deliverance as this; {hast punished...: Heb. hast withheld beneath our iniquities}
Howbeit thou {art} just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:
In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor {by} the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.

Do they provoke me to anger? saith the LORD: {do they} not {provoke} themselves to the confusion of their own faces?
And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts.
But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel. {Achan: also called, Achar} {Zabdi: also called, Zimri}
He that is far off shall die of the pestilence; and he that is near shall fall by the sword; and he that remaineth and is besieged shall die by the famine: thus will I accomplish my fury upon them.
And the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as {it is} this day.
If they sin against thee, (for {there is} no man that sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near;

As keepers of a field, are they against her round about; because she hath been rebellious against me, saith the LORD.
The land also shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her sabbaths, while she lieth desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their iniquity: because, even because they despised my judgments, and because their soul abhorred my statutes.
And {that} I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity:
So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,
Do not abhor {us}, for thy name's sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.
And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this great city?
Her adversaries are the chief, her enemies prosper; for the LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy.
The LORD is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity. {commandment: Heb. mouth}
O LORD God of Israel, thou {art} righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as {it is} this day: behold, we {are} before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as {his} eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne {chastisement}, I will not offend {any more}:
If they sin against thee, (for {there is} no man which sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them over before {their} enemies, and they carry them away captives unto a land far off or near; {they carry them away captives: Heb. they that take them captives carry them away}
And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord GOD.

O my dove, {that art} in the clefts of the rock, in the secret {places} of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet {is} thy voice, and thy countenance {is} comely.
