[A Psalm of Asaph.] O God, the heathen are come into thine inheritance; thy holy temple have they defiled; they have laid Jerusalem on heaps. {of: or, for}
Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed {as} a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest.
And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.
But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers.
For, behold, the LORD commandeth, and he will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts. {breaches: or, droppings}
Thy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.
But I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.

And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:

That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and {it is} cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion. {large: Heb. through-aired} {windows: or, my windows}
Behold, I will command, saith the LORD, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an inhabitant.

Then set it empty upon the coals thereof, that the brass of it may be hot, and may burn, and {that} the filthiness of it may be molten in it, {that} the scum of it may be consumed.
We are confounded, because we have heard reproach: shame hath covered our faces: for strangers are come into the sanctuaries of the LORD'S house.
And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed: her princes are become like harts {that} find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer.
The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things: for she hath seen {that} the heathen entered into her sanctuary, whom thou didst command {that} they should not enter into thy congregation. {pleasant: or, desirable}
How is the gold become dim! {how} is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street.
Because of the mountain of Zion, which is desolate, the foxes walk upon it.
And I will give it into the hands of the strangers for a prey, and to the wicked of the earth for a spoil; and they shall pollute it.

Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:

Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; {even} all {that} the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.
The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in.
And he shall break down the house, the stones of it, and the timber thereof, and all the morter of the house; and he shall carry {them} forth out of the city into an unclean place.
Therefore will I do unto {this} house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.
And the company shall stone them with stones, and dispatch them with their swords; they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses with fire. {dispatch...: or, single them out}
And the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall be defiled as the place of Tophet, because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink offerings unto other gods.
And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours.
