And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this.
The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; {there is} none to raise her up.
And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, {thou} wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:
Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister; therefore will I give her cup into thine hand.
For a just {man} falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.
The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness. {direct: Heb. rectify}
For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.
{There is} a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.
Also Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.
For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions {are} with us; and {as for} our iniquities, we know them;
Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother. {destroy: Heb. cut off}
And all the people shall know, {even} Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart,
The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death.
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away {the punishment} thereof; because they have despised the law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after the which their fathers have walked:
Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty {is} a fading flower, which {are} on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine! {overcome: Heb. broken}
{Though} hand {join} in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.
The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide {it} not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.
O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou {it} for thy name's sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.
They that make a graven image {are} all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they {are} their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed. {delectable: Heb. desirable}
O Israel, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.
Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
For I {will be} unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, {even} I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue {him}.
