And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who {were} weeping {before} the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, {even} that was slain with the Midianitish woman, {was} Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites. {chief...: Heb. house of a father}
Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, {but} turned {their} backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.
And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest {is} upon you.
But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.

And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,
My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him {for} the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my name.
Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. {for...: Heb. with my zeal}
And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.
In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.
And Eleazar Aaron's son took him {one} of the daughters of Putiel to wife; and she bare him Phinehas: these {are} the heads of the fathers of the Levites according to their families.
Eleazar begat Phinehas, Phinehas begat Abishua,
The son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest:
Thy wickedness {may hurt} a man as thou {art}; and thy righteousness {may profit} the son of man.
And I will bring you out of the midst thereof, and deliver you into the hands of strangers, and will execute judgments among you.
And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.
And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.
And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw {it}, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
