For what {is} the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
So {are} the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite's hope shall perish:

The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?
For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in {yourselves}, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and {into} many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
{Is} not destruction to the wicked? and a strange {punishment} to the workers of iniquity?
He also {shall be} my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him.

And he spake a parable unto them {to this end}, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear {me}:
The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.
Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath: they cry not when he bindeth them.
Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. {offended: he relapseth, or, falleth into sin}

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites {are}: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue? {What shall be given...: or, What shall the deceitful tongue give unto thee? or, what shall it profit thee?} {done: Heb. added}
Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.
For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day: and shall I be enquired of by you, O house of Israel? {As} I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will not be enquired of by you.
