When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died.

{As} they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.
For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, {so} I will be with thee.
Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,

And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, {even} two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.
And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.
Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour {is} humility.
And in the thirty and eighth year of Asa king of Judah began Ahab the son of Omri to reign over Israel: and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty and two years.
For all those {things} hath mine hand made, and all those {things} have been, saith the LORD: but to this {man} will I look, {even} to {him that is} poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:

And I will visit upon her the days of Baalim, wherein she burned incense to them, and she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and forgat me, saith the LORD.
But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to {the image of} Baal.
And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him. {inward...: Gr. bowels}
And Samuel said, When thou {wast} little in thine own sight, {wast} thou not {made} the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?

And Saul answered and said, {Am} not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me? {so...: Heb. according to this word}
I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hid from me: for now, O Ephraim, thou committest whoredom, {and} Israel is defiled.
Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Israel have I made known that which shall surely be.
And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect {that} which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images. {images: or, sun images}
And the glorious beauty, which {is} on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, {and} as the hasty fruit before the summer; which {when} he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up. {eateth: Heb. swalloweth}
And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.
And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.
