And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.
He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.
But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb. {worthy: or, double}

Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name {was} Hagar.
And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.

And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, {Am} I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?
And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.
Now these {are} the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.

And he had two wives; the name of the one {was} Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
Because it shut not up the doors of my {mother's} womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.
And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so {Abraham} begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac {begat} Jacob; and Jacob {begat} the twelve patriarchs.
As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
