But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen {do}: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips {is} wise.
For {as} the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth. {break: Heb. profane}
For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice {is known} by multitude of words.
For in the multitude of dreams and many words {there are} also {divers} vanities: but fear thou God.
And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which {am but} dust and ashes:
And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
{It is} a snare to the man {who} devoureth {that which is} holy, and after vows to make enquiry.
For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same {is} a perfect man, {and} able also to bridle the whole body.
But our God {is} in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.
And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy {it} for ten's sake.
And he said {unto him}, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do {it}, if I find thirty there.
And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,
And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed {be} the man that eateth {any} food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted {any} food.
And this stone, which I have set {for} a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

Seest thou a man {that is} hasty in his words? {there is} more hope of a fool than of him. {words: or, matters?}
The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.
Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with {his} lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever {it be} that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth {of it}, then he shall be guilty in one of these.
Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.
{Is} not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are! {height of the stars: Heb. head of the stars}
And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;
But in vain they do worship me, teaching {for} doctrines the commandments of men.
And hearken thou to the supplication of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place: and hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place: and when thou hearest, forgive. {toward this place: or, in this place}
And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.
Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul. {mouth: Heb. palate}
And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.
And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded {it} to be given {her}.
Hearken therefore unto the supplications of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, which they shall make toward this place: hear thou from thy dwelling place, {even} from heaven; and when thou hearest, forgive. {make: Heb. pray} {toward...: or, in this place}
