In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream, {and} told the sum of the matters. {had: Chaldee, saw} {matters: or, words}

And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves.

I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of {my} body, and the visions of my head troubled me. {body: Chaldee, sheath}

And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.

And it came to pass, when I, {even} I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.

In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.

Hitherto {is} the end of the matter. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.

Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth {month}, in the fifth {day} of the month, as I {was} among the captives by the river of Chebar, {that} the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God. {captives: Heb. captivity}

Then was Daniel brought in before the king. {And} the king spake and said unto Daniel, {Art} thou that Daniel, which {art} of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry? {father: or, grandfather}
