How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, {and} grieve him in the desert! {provoke: or, rebel against}

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, {and} as {in} the day of temptation in the wilderness: {provocation: Heb. contention}
While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, {and} he fought against them.
And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, {and} ground {it} very small, {even} until it was as small as dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount.
And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; {Is it} a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?
And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.

Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name {is} in him.
And they that escape of you shall remember me among the nations whither they shall be carried captives, because I am broken with their whorish heart, which hath departed from me, and with their eyes, which go a whoring after their idols: and they shall lothe themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.
Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they {are} a rebellious house.
Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
But hast done evil above all that were before thee: for thou hast gone and made thee other gods, and molten images, to provoke me to anger, and hast cast me behind thy back:
Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; {it is} iniquity, even the solemn meeting. {iniquity: or, grief}

When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.
And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband {are} at the door, and shall carry thee out.
They angered {him} also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes:
Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips.
And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:

Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward. {laden: Heb. of heaviness} {gone...: Heb. alienated, or, separated}
Because thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, but hast fretted me in all these {things}; behold, therefore I also will recompense thy way upon {thine} head, saith the Lord GOD: and thou shalt not commit this lewdness above all thine abominations.
But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments, which {if} a man do, he shall even live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly polluted: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.

Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in {their} heart; and they have not known my ways.
