David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard {it}, they went down thither to him.
Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which {belongeth} to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim. {Ephesdammim: or, the coast of Dammim, called Pasdammim}
Wherefore Adonizedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,
And his wife Jehudijah bare Jered the father of Gedor, and Heber the father of Socho, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah. And these {are} the sons of Bithiah the daughter of Pharaoh, which Mered took. {Jehudijah: or, the Jewess}
And in the mountains, Shamir, and Jattir, and Socoh,
And at Enrimmon, and at Zareah, and at Jarmuth,
And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.
And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, {and} the king of Eglon.
Yet will I bring an heir unto thee, O inhabitant of Mareshah: he shall come unto Adullam the glory of Israel. {inhabitant: Heb. inhabitress} {he...: or, the glory of Israel shall, etc}

And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name {was} Hirah.
