In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, came Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and all his army against Jerusalem, and they besieged it.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The fast of the fourth {month}, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace. {feasts: or, solemn, or, set times}
Again in the ninth year, in the tenth month, in the tenth {day} of the month, the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Behold the mounts, they are come unto the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, thou seest {it}. {mounts: or, engines of shot}
Then the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled, and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which {was} by the king's garden; (now the Chaldeans {were} by the city round about:) and they went by the way of the plain.
Thou also, son of man, take thee a tile, and lay it before thee, and pourtray upon it the city, {even} Jerusalem:
And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee.
For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,
And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of {my} covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.
At his right hand was the divination for Jerusalem, to appoint captains, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with shouting, to appoint {battering} rams against the gates, to cast a mount, {and} to build a fort. {captains: or, battering rams: Heb. rams}
The shepherds with their flocks shall come unto her; they shall pitch {their} tents against her round about; they shall feed every one in his place.
