Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

So let all thine enemies perish, O LORD: but {let} them that love him {be} as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.

But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest {them} from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies; {they did...: Heb. they returned to do evil}

And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, {that} they returned, and corrupted {themselves} more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way. {corrupted...: or, were corrupt} {ceased...: Heb. let nothing fall of their}

While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that {be} along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover {them} within that time?

And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.

And he saw that rest {was} good, and the land that {it was} pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.
