And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out {the inhabitants of} the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. {drave...: or, possessed the mountain}

Of the children of Joseph, {namely}, of the children of Ephraim, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
And the lot of the children of Joseph fell from Jordan by Jericho, unto the water of Jericho on the east, to the wilderness that goeth up from Jericho throughout mount Bethel, {fell: Heb. went forth}
Of the tribe of Zabulon {were} sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph {were} sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin {were} sealed twelve thousand.
For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell {in}, with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance.
And the LORD was with him; {and} he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.
But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty {God} of Jacob; (from thence {is} the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)
And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city {was called} Luz at the first. {Bethel: that is, The house of God}

And the border went over from thence toward Luz, to the side of Luz, which {is} Bethel, southward; and the border descended to Atarothadar, near the hill that {lieth} on the south side of the nether Bethhoron.
And the man Jeroboam {was} a mighty man of valour: and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph. {was industrious: Heb. did work} {charge: Heb. burden}
And their possessions and habitations {were}, Bethel and the towns thereof, and eastward Naaran, and westward Gezer, with the towns thereof; Shechem also and the towns thereof, unto Gaza and the towns thereof: {towns: Heb. daughters} {unto Gaza: or, Adassa}
Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour {it}, and {there be} none to quench {it} in Bethel.
So Jacob came to Luz, which {is} in the land of Canaan, that {is}, Bethel, he and all the people that {were} with him.
Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they {are} bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD {is} with us: fear them not. {defence: Heb. shadow}
And goeth out from Bethel to Luz, and passeth along unto the borders of Archi to Ataroth,
