And the king of Assyria hearkened unto him: for the king of Assyria went up against Damascus, and took it, and carried {the people of} it captive to Kir, and slew Rezin. {Damascus: Heb. Dammesek}
After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Necho king of Egypt came up to fight against Carchemish by Euphrates: and Josiah went out against him. {temple: Heb. house}
And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. {Babel: Gr. Babylon}
Against Egypt, against the army of Pharaohnecho king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah.
And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which {was} the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, {that} Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it.
Concerning Damascus. Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; {there is} sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet. {fainthearted: Heb. melted} {on...: or, as on the sea}
The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts.
Where {are} the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where {are} the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
Woe to them {that are} at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, {which are} named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came! {are at...: or, are secure} {chief: or, firstfruits}
And the king of Assyria brought {men} from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed {them} in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof.
Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years.

Where {are} the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where {are} the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?
Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: {be they} better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?
Therefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his enemies together; {join: Heb. mingle}
The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from {being} a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.

The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceaseth: he hath broken the covenant, he hath despised the cities, he regardeth no man.
Where {is} the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?
And have cast their gods into the fire: for they {were} no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them. {cast: Heb. given}
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because that Moab and Seir do say, Behold, the house of Judah {is} like unto all the heathen;
The inhabitants of Zidon and Arvad were thy mariners: thy wise {men}, O Tyrus, {that} were in thee, were thy pilots.
Haran, and Canneh, and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Asshur, {and} Chilmad, {were} thy merchants.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; An adversary {there shall be} even round about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be spoiled.

And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad.
And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baalgad under mount Hermon unto the entering into Hamath.

Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands,
Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of {other} lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand?
And all the people shall know, {even} Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart,
