This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.

John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. {for: or, unto}

When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
